Biodiversity in Farming Communities

Pilot Program
In January 2005, the Fondation de la faune introduced a new pilot program known as Mise en valeur de la biodiversité des cours d’eau en milieu agricole, in cooperation with the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) and a group of private and public partners.  Over a five-year period, the program to develop biodiversity in streams and rivers in farming communities will support a dozen farming organizations in their attempt to develop an innovative approach to the integrated management of farming and wildlife resources in Québec.

Interventions Aimed at Tributary Basins
In May 2005, ten projects from among the thirty submitted were selected to participate in the pilot program. Each project is headed by a regional federation of the UPA or by an agro-environmental advisory club. The goal of the pilot program is to intervene directly at the level of tributary basins to improve farming practices and the quality of river and stream banks and ultimately, to develop wildlife habitats.

A New Reference in Sustainable Development in Farming Communities
One program goal is to prepare a guide of farming trade practices applying to rivers and streams for distribution among concerned stakeholders. The guide will be distributed to farmers, UPA federations and the Financière agricole, etc. It will also be offered to municipalities and environmental groups, including tributary basin project sponsors.
